Pioneering Variety Show from One of America’s Entertainment Capitals— Branson, Mo.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History today received a collection of objects from the Baldknobbers, a variety show based in Branson, Mo. The donation documents the long and rich history of this variety jamboree show and its place in American entertainment culture.

The group was formed in 1959 when brothers Bill, Jim, Lyle and Bob Mabe began entertaining visitors on the Taneycomo lakefront with “The Baldknobbers Jamboree.” The Baldknobbers were named after an Ozarks vigilante group from the 1880s and are considered Branson’s first country music-and-comedy show.

The Mabe brothers performed with folklore instruments: washtub bass, banjo, Dobro guitar, washboard and a mule’s jawbone to provide rhythm. The performances were an instant hit with visiting tourists and local fishermen. The band became so popular that it outgrew its original location and moved into an old skating rink, converting it into Branson’s first live-entertainment theater. The group continued to expand and today The Baldknobbers Jamboree Theatre seats 1,500 people in the heart of Branson’s entertainment district.

“This donation tells an interesting story about a homegrown genre in American entertainment,” said Brent D. Glass, director of the museum. “The collection expands on the museum’s country-music holdings.”

The donation includes Jim “Droopy Drawers” Mabe’s stage costume, hat, washboard and glove; Lyle “George Aggernite” Mabe’s costume and washtub bass; Bill Mabe’s red-and-gold fringe stage shirt and boots; plus brochures, souvenir books and pamphlets. Ed Snowden donated a Dobro guitar on behalf of the late Dennis Mabe (Bill Mabe’s son).
“It not only means a great deal to our family to have these items included in the Smithsonian collections as a tribute to my dad and uncles who started the show in 1959, but it also is a tribute to all the entertainers who perform in Branson,” said Tim Mabe of the Baldknobbers.

Although three founding Mabe brothers are now deceased, the Baldknobbers continue to be a family affair and the group has grown to include 16 musicians, vocalists and comedians.

The National Museum of American History collects, preserves and displays American heritage in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. Ozark Mountain Country has a long history of live entertainment and country music shows, but none have the staying power of Branson’s first show, “The Baldknobbers Jamboree.”

It was exactly 10 years after Hugo and Mary Herschend bought the Marvel Cave from William Henry Lynch’s family and began square dances in the cave that brothers Bill, Jim, Lyle and Bob Mabe began entertaining visitors in downtown Branson on the Taneycomo lakefront.

“My dad and uncles chose downtown mostly because in the late 50s that was where the action was because there was no ‘strip,’” said second-generation Baldknobbers Tim Mabe, son of Bill and Katie Mabe. “Marvel Cave was a couple of miles outside of town and 76 did not look like it does today. Table Rock Dam had just been completed, so downtown Branson was where the biggest concentration of resorts, guests and visitors mainly came to fish.”

The brothers eventually took the name “Baldknobbers,” after an Ozarks vigilante group from the late 1880s that held secret meetings on treeless hilltops, or Bald Knobs.

“Most of us from the Ozarks know what the Baldknobbers were,” Tim Mabe said. “Dad said that everyone who came to the area wanted to see a hillbilly, and with the rich history of the area, it just made sense to call themselves the Baldknobbers.”

The Baldknobbers were an immediate hit with fishermen and tourists to the Branson lakes area.

“Grandpa used to say that if the fisherman brought their wives to the show, then they got to stay and fish another day,” said Joy Bilyeu, granddaughter of Bill Mabe and third-generation vocalist. “So I guess they loved it.”

The Mabe brothers performed old-time country, bluegrass and gospel music with a washtub bass, banjo and dobro, plus an old washboard and the jawbone of a mule for rhythm.

The show began to become a full-time enterprise, with Katie, Betty and Joyce, the wives of several of the Mabe brothers, handling the advertising. The trio donned country dresses and walked around Branson’s small downtown area with signs announcing the show.

“Our moms would sell souvenirs, take tickets, usher, sell concessions, sew costumes and what they called ‘check out,’ which meant they counted the money,” Tim Mabe said. “Our dads were on stage, so our moms had to handle everything else. They were an integral part of the show, they were just not on stage.”

The first venue the Baldknobbers called home was in the basement of the old downtown community building. The “Baldknobbers” were also the band who played square dances at the Shepherd of the Hills during their first year of operation in 1960.

“In 1960, my dad and uncles performed as the Baldknobbers on opening day at Silver Dollar City and they were in the original cast of the Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Drama,” said current cast member Brent Mabe, son of Lyle and Betty Mabe. “We all believe 1960 was a pivotal year for Branson. Without Silver Dollar City and Shepherd of the Hills, Branson would not be what it is today.”

After quickly running out of room, the brothers moved upstairs at the old community building, then the old Sammy Lane Pavilion on the lakefront.

As the Baldknobbers began to gain popularity, the brothers left the pavilion and converted an old skating rink on the Taneycomo lakefront. Branson’s first live entertainment theater was born in 1964.

“By 1962, the show was regularly scheduled in the evenings through the summer and early fall and I think it was just a natural progression of events,” Brent Mabe said. “It was a real theater, with a stage and theater seats. Stage lights were either on or off and there was not the production value we have today, but it was a real live music theater.”

Throughout the next four years, popularity began to soar once again and there was even more need to expand the venue. In 1968, The Baldknobbers Jamboree Theatre was built on 76 Country Boulevard.

“That was when our dads quit their day jobs,” Tim Mabe said. “That was when they took the leap of faith to make Baldknobbers and Branson a major part of our family’s lives.”

As the Branson entertainment scene began to grow by leaps and bounds in the late 80s and early 90s, the Baldknobbers retained their spot as one of the most popular shows in the area, even though they went through several changes.

“In 1994, when my dad retired from the stage, I became Droopy Drawers Jr, and that was also a big leap for me,” Tim Mabe said. “Then in 2006 our cousin Dennis Mabe died. He was the best entertainer Branson had ever seen, and I know today that dad, Bill and Dennis would be proud, and would’ve loved that our 50th anniversary went
so well.”

While the original Mabe brothers have long since retired or passed away, the current generation of Mabes still take the stage each night at the theater, carrying on the legendary name of not only the Mabe family, but the Baldknobbers, as well.

“Even in the very first show, the Baldknobbers sang gospel music,” Tim Mabe said. “Our grandfather Mabe was a Baptist minister who instilled in all 11 of his children,
and all 60 something of us grandkids, a love for Christ and how important family and faith are to our everyday lives. And that has not changed in over 50 years and
never will.”

After 50 years of performing in Branson, the new generations of Mabes do whatever they can to keep the show fresh and new.

“We do an all-new show each year. It’s always country music and comedy, but it has all-new music, comedy and costuming,” Tim Mabe said. “I think that is why so many of our guests see our show year after year. Plus, we have more third- and fourth-generation family members that want to make music a part of their lives.”

Now the oldest show in Branson, the “Baldknobbers” celebrated 50 years last season, and are showing no signs of slowing down.

“My dad said it best when he said, ‘We don’t have a star, the show is our star.’ And that really sums up the Baldknobbers and why I think we will be going strong in 50 more years.

(June 22, 2009) Branson, MO - The Baldknobbers Jamboree, , was recognized on Saturday June 20, 2009 for founding the Live Music Show Industry in Branson, Missouri at a celebration for their 50th Anniversary. The Mabe family and the cast of the Baldknobbers was joined Branson entertainers, dignitaries and friends during the Baldknobbers Jamboree Show.

“I am honored that so many of our neighbors and friends joined us for this celebration! When the Mabe family started the Baldknobbers 50 years ago, we really had no idea where Branson would be today. The Baldknobbers have entertained millions of people and to be entertaining guests 50 years later, I am extremely proud of my family,” said Katie Mabe, owner and co-founder.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon through a Governor’s proclamation pronounced “the Baldknobbers’ tradition of country music and comedy has provided family oriented entertainment that has drawn audiences from all over the world.”

Honored guests spoke and presented the Baldknobbers with several awards.

Missouri Senator Jack Goodman presented the Baldknobbers and the Mabe family a Missouri Senate Resolution for “Honoring the strong legacy and heritage of professional entertainment, wholesome entertainment and good family entertainment that the Baldknobbers started and continued to provide in Southwest Missouri.”

Missouri State Representative Dennis Wood presented the Baldknobbers with a Missouri House Resolution and added, “Family is what it’s all about in Branson. When you talk about family you’ve got to talk about the Mabes. What you have done and what you have preserved here will be cherished forever.”

“It is pleasure to congratulate you all (the Baldknobbers) on 50 years of continued entertainment,” said, Bob Smith III, Interim Director of Missouri Division of Tourism.

The Baldknobbers Jamboree, the legendary original Branson show is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in the Ozarks town that has become known as the "Live Music Show Capital."

On Friday June 19, the Baldknobbers are inviting the entertainers that have performed in their show over the past 50 years to their show for a special night.

"We have always talked about our Baldknobbers family and we want them to join us on a special night where we recognize them and say thank you for their part in our history," says Tim Mabe, producer, comedian and second generation.

"You would think that since the Baldknobbers have been performing for 50 years that the list of our past cast would be huge, but really it's not. At The Baldknobbers, Branson's First Show, The Hillbilly Gets the Last Laugh!

In 1959 four brothers calling themselves The Baldknobbers began entertaining visitors to Branson, Missouri. They called their show the Baldknobbers Jamboree. Fifty years and four generations later, The Baldknobbers are still entertaining audiences with country music and their own distinctive brand of hillbilly humor.

Although the comedy evolves and routines change, there is always a common thread of what makes it work. Hillbilly humor encompasses universal subjects that everyone knows and experiences: happiness, sadness, love, marriage, car trouble...every aspect of daily life.

It was their hillbilly humor that first gave the Baldknobbers popular recognition outside of Branson. Baldknobbers co-founder Lyle Mabe's comic character "George Aggernite" did television commercials for Empire Gas, which aired at 6:12 PM, during the weather portion of the evening newscast. People from Springfield to Joplin and all over the Ozarks tuned in just to watch the hilarious commercials. Aggernite's rubbery face, his trouble with pronunciations, and other antics intrigued the audience. The commercials also featured takeoffs of television shows and other commercials, keeping it current and keeping the audience tuned in. Viewers became fans of The Baldknobbers even before they saw the show.

In 2009 Baldknobbers comedians are still adding to the merriment and high spirits that audiences enjoy at the show. Straight-man Bob Leftridge has fresh reactions every night to Stub Meadows's unbelievable stories and antics. And when "Droopy Drawers, Jr." and "Hargus Marcel" get in on the act, anything can happen, and often does. The band and vocalists don't escape the zinging comedy arrows either and seem equally surprised and entertained by the zany hi-jinx.

Tim Mabe, Droopy Drawers, Jr., is the son of Jim and Katie Mabe. The late Jim Mabe was one of the four founders and the original Droopy Drawers. Tim Mabe and other second- and third-generation Mabes are part of the 19-member cast of The Baldknobbers Jamboree. The show is an excellent mix of old and new country music, laced with a sidesplitting, generous dose of hillbilly humor.

Every brand of humor has various common themes. Understanding what makes people laugh, and why a particular subject or story is funny, is a talent, and one that has served this show well. The Baldknobbers brand of comedy touches something in everyone and has the unique ability to let people laugh at just about anything.

Some of America's favorite humor is physical and the Baldknobbers hillbilly humor scores big in this category. The wild outfits the comics wear contrast to the band's handsome jackets and the female vocalists' beaded and sequined dresses. Costume changes were certainly not part of the original show. Outlandish hats and shoes, oversized, too-short britches, crazy plaids mixed with bright patterns and too-long, too-wide ties are a perfect backdrop for Stub's rubbery-faced expressions and Hargus's sorrowful look as he relates his latest woes. The expressions on Droopy's face match his comic getup.

(May 19, 2009) Branson, MO - Four generations of visitors to Branson, Missouri, have enjoyed great country music and hillbilly humor at The Baldknobbers Jamboree. This legendary original Branson show is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in the Ozarks town that has become known as the Live Music Capital of the World.

There are families who have been traveling to Branson to see the Baldknobbers for generations. Multiple generations are represented on stage as well as in the audience. Second-generation entertainers Tim and Brent Mabe recalled a recent guest who told them, "My grandmother used to bring me to see your show. Now I bring my family."

Brent goes on to say, "People tell us all the time they remember Tim and me and all the cousins playing baseball in the parking lot with a crushed-up soda cup, while our dads were on stage in the theatre.

The Baldknobbers Jamboree in Branson, Missouri, is really a history of music in Branson and the Ozarks. While the band doesn't have washtubs or a jawbone anymore, the country music show that audiences enjoy each night adheres faithfully to the very beginnings of music in Branson and The Baldknobbers, Branson's first show.

It was 1959 when four Mabe brothers started entertaining Branson visitors on Taneycomo's lakefront. Most of the visitors had come for the fishing, and The Baldknobbers Jamboree was good family entertainment for the evening. Today in Branson the Baldknobbers still give fans the best in country classics, "hot" new country, Gospel tunes...and comedy.

Second- and third-generations of Mabes and a cast of 19 singers, musicians and comedians give enthusiastic audiences a high-energy, fast-paced show. "I believe our best quality is that we entertain everyone from the age of 2 to 92," says Tim Mabe, producer and comedian Droopy Drawers Jr. Indeed, kids and grandparents alike enjoy the variety of country music and laugh out loud at the antics and tales the comedians weave into the show.

The Baldknobbers took their name from the Ozarks vigilante group that met on the bald tops, or knobs, of mountains in the area in the late 1800's. In the early days of their music, The Baldknobbers played during the intermission square dance the very first year of the Shepherd of the Hills outdoor drama, a story about that vigilante era in Branson.

At the Baldknobbers first shows, the instruments actually did include a washtub for rhythm, the jawbone of a mule instead of drums, as well as a dobro or flat-top guitar, and an acoustic guitar. Second-generation Brent Mabe, who plays guitar and bass in the show, remembers early days on the lakefront when he and his cousin Tim Mabe would earn 50 cents putting bumper stickers on cars and for a free Coke would do some cleanup. He says fans have told him, "I remember you playing ball in the parking lot, with a crushed-up soda cup."

It was 1968 when the Baldknobbers built their 1500-seat theater out on Highway 76 and Brent Mabe still remembers the "huge, empty building." It meant quitting day jobs and was a major decision for the group. But it was quite an improvement from 50 folding chairs in the theater on the lakefront.

Today, Tim Mabe is the producer of the show, but as Tim explains, "We don't have a star, the show is our star and all 19 of us put our mark on this show. Many of the talented musicians and singers have been with the Baldknobbers for many years so our show is collaborative." About the 2009 show Tim says, "In addition to a fantastic show, we will have events all year long to mark this milestone in Branson's entertainment history."

In 1959 The Baldknobbers sometimes performed for a crowd of just a dozen people. Today The Baldknobbers Jamboree is often a sellout, and entertainers give the same energy and enthusiasm and personal attention to their audiences as they did on the lakefront.

Branson's First Show--the Baldknobbers--reaches out with an opportunity to welcome their first fans to see the show again!

September 2008 (Branson, Missouri) - Branson's entertainment industry turns 50! And 2009 also marks the 50th anniversary of Branson's first show, The Baldknobbers.

In 1959, when the Mabe brothers started entertaining visitors to the lakes in downtown Branson, they did not know they would start a tradition that would later become the "Live Music Capital of the World".

Calling themselves the Baldknobbers, brothers Jim, Bill, Lyle, and Bob Mabe decided the fisherman needed something to do in the evenings. Using the great American entrepreneurial spirit, they donned hillbilly costumes and used homemade instruments to play country and hillbilly music. Those instruments included a washtub bass, washboard for rhythm, dobro or flat top guitar, acoustic guitar and the jawbone of a mule in lieu of drums. Although the instruments have changed, the focus on family entertainment has not.

Today's Baldknobbers feature the children and grandchildren of the original brothers plus a dynamic cast of singers, musicians, and comedians who continue to showcase a variety of country music. Guests enjoy great country classics, hot new country hits and some of the funniest comedians anywhere.

Barbara Fairchild to Return to Branson to Perform Gospel Matinee

February 2007 (Branson, Missouri) - Legendary gospel and country singer, Barbara Fairchild, recently announced that she would be returning to Branson in November and December to present her gospel matinee show at The Baldknobbers Theater. Barbara has been entertaining since she was 5 years old. The phrase "to see her is to love her," is really true of Barbara. Her sincere love for people and bubbly personality makes everyone around her feel good. Barbara’s career in country music accelerated in 1973, she was nominated for a Grammy when her song, "The Teddy Bear Song" reached # 1 on the charts. She has had many hits following "The Teddy Bear Song" including "Baby Doll" and "Kid Stuff".

Since 1991 Barbara has been recognized in the southern gospel music field with songs such as "Could You Walk A Mile," "Turn Right And Go Straight," "Apples Of Gold," and "Uncommon Love." She was also a member of the gospel group, "Heirloom" along with Candy Hemphill Christmas, Sherri Easter and Tonya Goodman Sykes. On August 12, 2003 she realized a long time dream to record a gospel album,"Love Never Fails" with her best friends in country music, Connie Smith and Sharon White. In January of 2006 Barbara released her latest hymns album with Daywind Music entitled, "He Kept On Loving Me."

Barbara has been an important member of the Branson community since 1992 when she moved here to perform in the Mel Tillis Show. In 1993, she started producing and performing in her own show where she performed for the past 11 years. Barbara and her husband Roy now tour throughout the year performing at churches, concerts and other venues throughout the United States. For several years she has been a spokesperson for Feed The Children, a sponsor for the Foster Grandparents Organization and is a member of "Concerned Women Of America."

Together Barbara and Roy are a dynamic couple who have a powerful impact on the people they meet. They have a message to share that inspires and encourages others everywhere they go. The 3:00 PM Gospel matinee show will begin November 6 and run through December 6, 2007.

Before joining The Baldknobbers Jamboree Music Show, Hargus performed with The Moe Bandy Show, Country Tonite Show and The Sons of the Pioneers Show. "I feel it is an honor to work at The Baldknobbers. They are a great bunch to work with," said Adams.

The two hour show is power packed country, bluegrass, gospel and patriotic music; beautiful costumes and the side-splitting comedy antics of Hargus Marcell, Stub Meadows and Droopy Drawers Jr.

Originally performing on the lakefront for fishing enthusiasts, the successful family music show began drawing large crowds and gaining national publicity, which created a demand for a much larger facility. In 1968 The Baldknobbers Jamboree show moved to its current building. Through the years the theater has seen several renovations and now seats 1500 people.

The Baldknobbers Jamboree, "The Show That Started It All" is located on the famed 76 Country Music Boulevard in Branson, Missouri, with performances Monday through Saturday at 8 PM.
